Not necessarily, but we are prioritizing artists that have a connection to the state and region. This could include previous residency or family heritage. If you feel like you have a strong connection, please apply! Just be sure to explain your connection in your residency narrative.

We’re glad that we can generously support our Resident Artist, thanks to funding from ASCA and the NEA. This includes:
Stipend – The Resident Artist will receive a $2500 stipend.
Housing – The Resident Artist will have the use of a private furnished apartment during their stay. The apartment includes living room, bedroom, bathroom, and a basic but full kitchen.
Studio Space – The Resident Artist will have access to a private studio within the Department of Art and Design. The studio space is approximately (20” x 20” feet) and includes wifi, storage, tables, seating, task lighting. Although there is not a sink within the studio, there is water access nearby.
This studio space is carved out of a larger gallery space, and there will be additional use of the remaining space on a scheduled basis, primarily for classwork and studio visits.
Shared Access to Department Facilities and Equipment – The Resident Artist will be a member of our community during their time in residence and will have access to department facilities. The expectation is that the Artist will be a good steward and community member in these shared spaces.
There are facilities for many different disciplines, including photography, printmaking, woodworking, ceramics, light metal work, and digital studios such as a computer lab, laser cutter, 3D printing, and a 4x4 Makerbot CNC router .
Exhibition Opportunities – The Resident Artist can have their work considered for future exhibition in one of the gallery spaces at the International Art Center for an exhibition that would happen at some point after the residency. Also, opportunities could be created for smaller pop-up exhibitions during the residency.

The Residency will be three weeks long, and the Resident Artist will need to work with residency directors to schedule their time on site during the spring 2026 semester. The Resident Artist could choose for their esidency to happen between January 29–March 7, or between March 24–April 30, 2026.
Artists are not held to a specific daily hourly requirement, but they are expected to be present in the space during most daytime class hours. The facilities are available after hours as well, should the artist want to work at night or on weekends.
Once the Artist in Residence has been selected, the directors will begin scheduling week-long Visiting Artists. These will occur during the spring time slots listed above, and the directors will work with selected artists to coordinate this times.

Technology — the Resident Artist will need to demonstrate that they are proficiently skilled with the equipment they intend to use during their residency. Minimal training is possible from faculty as needed, but artists are responsible for the safe use of any studio space. After using any shared facilities or equipment, the Resident Artist should return them to their original state.
Public Engagement – Because this residency is funded by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Resident Artist must engage in public community engagement. There are many possibilities of what this engagement might look like, including but not limited to: open studios, artist talks, workshops, and site visits. These public-facing events can be determined based on what best suits the artist. These will be determined in conjunction with program directors ahead of the start of the residency, so that marketing materials can be developed.

While the campus is very walkable, you will likely need transportation to move about town and to go from your lodging to your studio.
